A Guide To Obtaining Your Georgia Weapons Carry Permit in CHATHAM COUNTY, Georgia

This is a two part process in Chatham County. For the first portion-

YOU WILL NEED:
-         Proof of residence in Chatham County, Georgia(Drivers License)
-         Photo ID
-         Cash, Money Order or Cashiers Check (made payable to Chatham County Probate Court) in the EXACT amount of $37.00

WHO CAN APPLY:
-         Persons at least 21 years of age.
-         Military members between the ages of 18 and 21 years of age.
-         Please note the following documents are required for military members:
An ACTIVE DUTY ID CARD, Copy of orders to Hunter Army Airfield or proof of residence in Chatham County, and documentation showing completion of basic training.

Once you request the application and have paid the fee, fill the application out and return it to the person behind the desk. S/he will then provide you with the paperwork to take with you for the second part of the application process.

Monday through Friday: 10am to 6pm
Saturday: 10am to 2pm

The fee is $52.75, payable by MoneyOrder (made out to Cogent Systems GAPS) or by credit/ debit card uponregistration.

Your fingerprints will then be scanned electronically and sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.


ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
-Permits are valid for five years in the state of Georgia no matter what county you reside in.
- Permits will be sent to you by United States Postal Service
- If a permit is DENIED, there is NO refund
- Replacement fee for a LOST permit is$6.00
- Cost to renew a Georgia Weapons Carry License is $42.00. Documentation to bring with you: picture ID, proof of residence in Chatham County (drivers license) and your current GWCL.
- IF you are applying for a renewal after you have moved to Chatham County from another county, you will need to go through the steps outlined above for a first time permit issue in Chatham County. A background check and finger printing will be done again, and permit issued as standard for Chatham County.

(Reciprocity = valid permit holders are allowed to carry their firearms in these states. Please note- you must abide by those state laws. For example, if they are a CONCEAL ONLY state, your firearm must be concealed.)

  3. Please add South Carolina to your state reciprocity list. We can carry concealed there now. Hopefully, they will soon change their laws to allow open carry.

  4. Everything is done at the Probate Court now. Application, fingerprinting, and photo is done in Room 509. The price is $82. She told me I would receive mine in a week.
